YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND REDUCE YOUR PLASTIC POLLUTION!
WHY EARTH IS CHOKING IN PLASTIC AND WAYS YOU CAN REDUCE YOUR PLASTIC POLLUTION.

While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become addicted to single-use plastic products with severe environmental, social, economic and health consequences.
Around the world, over 1 million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, while over 5 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. In total, half of all plastic produced is designed for single-use purpose – used just once and then thrown away.
Plastics including microplastics are now abundant in our natural environment. They are becoming part of the Earth’s fossil record and a marker of our current geological era. They have even given a name to a new marine microbial habitat called the ‘plastisphere.’
Today, we produce over 400 million tonnes of plastic waste every year.
36% of all plastics produced are used in packaging as single use products and 90% of this ends up in landfills as unregulated waste.
Systemic change is needed to stop the flow of plastic waste ending up in the environment. Of the 7 billion tonnes of plastic waste generated globally so far, only half a billion is recycled and 6.5billion tonnes is lost to the environment or shipped thousands of Kilometres to destinations where it is most likely burned or dumped. The estimated annual loss in value of plastic packaging waste during sorting and processing is around $US120billion.

Cigarette butts – whose filters contain tiny plastic fibers are the most common type of plastic waste found in the environment. Food wrappers, plastic bottles, plastic bottle caps, plastic grocery bags, plastic straws are the most common items. Many of us use these products every day, without even thinking about where they might end up.
You can make a difference and help restore the health of the planet!
Solutions to plastic pollution and finding ways to #BeatPlasticPollution
Some ideas that you can do to reduce your plastic intake.
- Start a compost (Less plastic in your waste bins) on average 42% of waste in your bins are food scraps and 98% is wrapped in plastic bin bags.
- Take a reusable coffee cup to your local café
- Do your shopping at local markets or bulk stores
- Buy from sustainable and fair practices brands.
- Encourage your friends and family for the month of June to shop at local markets, or help you in planting a garden.
- Challenge your local councillor or member of parliament to do the same or get them to start a community garden or go plastic free in council held events in your neighbourhood.

We should protect and restore nature and the environment not just because of ourselves but for future generations.
